Fred Markussen

I, Fred Markussen, attended a class on Gandhi in 1969 at a Methodist Seminary in the San Francisco Bay area. As a young man, the professor had been part of Gandhi’s entourage. The class has had a huge impact on my life.

When Hassan came to our Indivisible Southern Arizona meeting to recruit members to attend a seven-day workshop on Nonviolence as taught and practiced by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I knew it was something I wanted to do. The March, 2018 training certified nine of us to be level one trainers in Kingian Nonviolence. I was so eager to apply my knowledge that when the first opportunity to be on a training team in May, 2018 appeared, I gave up my planned trip to Rocky Point with my Writer’s Group. I have continued to be involved in teaching Nonviolence.

The certification has given me much more than being able to impart my knowledge to others. The Six Principles and Six Steps have become guidelines for me in my personal life and in my political activity.
